The opportunity

Barge Walk is a 5km section of the Thames Path that runs from Hampton Court Bridge to Kingston Bridge and comes under the ownership of Historic Royal Palaces. ALL Creative was asked to create a new sign scheme for the area which would act as an extension to the sign strategy in place at Hampton Court Palace while respecting the natural environment of the waterslide area.

Our solution

Having reviewed the multitude of different signs in place along the pathway, we set about devising a scheme that would give Historic Royal Palaces a much stronger visual presence, while dramatically reducing the number of signs required to deliver the necessary information.

Our brief included the remit to create a new physical solution that would reflect the design ethos of the HRP sign strategy while introducing a softer, natural aesthetic. This was achieved by combining a strong signature oak element which was personalised with the HRP brand icon and wording.

The new gateway signs now welcome all visitors to Barge Walk, providing improved directional wayfinding, a specially drawn heads-up style orientation map, historical and natural interpretation about the area and essential information for everyone using the space

The result

The new scheme has recieved excellent feedback and praise from Historic Royal Palaces and is already having a positive impact in promoting awareness of the organisation and its role to all visitors to the area.
